Some professionals, including seasoned pros and first-day apprentices, do not realize the severity of excessive heat. Although relatable hazards are preventable, many fail to recognize the early signs of heat exhaustion or stroke. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in fact, says heat is one of the deadliest weather-related health outcomes with more than 600 fatal incidents in the United States every year.

No matter your profession, do not let the heat knock you off your feet. Remember the following five tips to stay cool through the summer on and off the job.

Although it can be uncomfortable to load up on extra gear, taking the time to dress properly and remain equipped for the day’s tasks is essential. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including eyewear, gloves, hard hats, knee pads and more, plays a vital role in minimizing exposure to hazards across all jobsites.

Keeping up with the past and present safety regulations also helps professionals stay in tune with best practices. For instance, the U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standard 1926.100 requires employees working in areas where there is a possible danger of head injury from impact, falling or flying objects or electrical shocks and burns to be protected by protective helmets.

Although demanding deadlines can make it difficult to take the time to recognize hazards around you, wear proper safety protection and avoid fatigue, practicing the necessary precautions is more than just a recommendation. According to the National Safety Council (NSC), every seven seconds a worker is injured on the job, totaling a staggering 4.6 million jobsite injuries a year.

Klein-equipped professionals get the job done wherever it is needed, including in high-risk environments such as on or near high-voltages or at height. Specifically, the installation, maintenance and repair and construction industries are noted within the top five occupations for the highest numbers of jobsite injuries resulting in days away from work.

At Klein Tools, safety remains a priority on and off the jobsite, day-in and day-out. In conjunction with NSC, we’re continuing the celebration National Safety Month. National Safety Month is observed annually in June to raise awareness for and reduce the leading causes of death on the job, at home and on the road.
